TAKING YOUR CHILD OUT OF SCHOOL

CAN I TAKE MY CHILD OUT OF SCHOOL DURING TERM TIME?

Unfortunately not.

However, a limited amount of time may be granted if the circumstances are exceptional- exceptional is not holiday however.

This is decided by the Headteacher and cannot be authorised by anyone else e.g. social worker, doctor.

Please be aware this would only be granted if the child’s attendance was already very good. If your child has poor attendance (below 95%) then it will also be a no.

Anyone taking unauthorised term-time absence (not agreed) will be liable for a fixed penalty notice of £60-£120.

Over the past two years there have been an average of ten fixed penalty notices per year, issued for unauthorised holidays and for poor attendance.

If you have any further queries, or would like to talk to someone about your child’s attendance please speak to our Attendance Lead Juliana Ashworth in the School Office.

Please be aware that from September 2019 any unauthorised absence in term time, of 4 days or more, is likely to result in a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) from the Local Authority.

The Local Authority, Department for Education and OFSTED are also very concerned about the impact of poor attendance on children's education and outcomes.

We have tried to be flexible and work within the guidance however are also concerned about the high number of children being taken out of school during term time, especially in the cases where those children have already got low attendance.

HOW TO AVOID A FIXED PENALTY NOTICE

In simple terms- Don't take your child out of school in term time.

All of the dates for School Holidays can be found here https://www.fairlight.brighton-hove.sch.uk/school-office/dates-for-your-diary

If you want to avoid a FPN and need further information about this, please arrange an appointment to talk to our Attendance Lead who can give you advice on this matter.

Please contact the School Office to arrange this.

We strongly advise you do this before booking a holiday or any other term time leave of absence.

WHAT DO I DO IF I AM GOING TO TAKE MY CHILD OUT OF SCHOOL?

In the event that you do however wish to take your child out of school for a leave of absence then you will need to complete a form to inform us of this.

The form can be found here https://www.fairlight.brighton-hove.sch.uk/school-office/medicine-administration/leave-of-absence-form

This form must be completed and returned to the School Office or Attendance Lead julianaashworth@fairlight.brighton-hove.sch.uk atleast 5 days before the first day of the absence.

ANY PARENT who takes a leave of absence without completing this form or informing us will be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) from the Local Authority as this is a Safeguarding issue.

Other agencies may also need to be contacted as we need to ensure we know where children are and that they are okay.

Any child who leaves the country or who has any contact with an outside agency (e.g. Police/ Passport Control) will be registered and schools are often informed of this. Therefore if we also subsequently find out you took a leave of absence without informing us then we will have to treat this as you not telling us.

It is better that you tell us even if you don't like our response.
