YEAR 5 TOPIC: SPACE & EARTH
Welcome to our Solar System!
Travel into space and explore the objects of our solar system! Learn all about the 8 planets (Hey aren't there supposed to be 9? What's going on?), their many moons, other solar bodies such as the dwarf planets, asteroids and comets... and about Sol - the Sun - the star around which they all orbit!
Let's start with learning The Planet Song!
Solar System Learning Resources
Find out more about our Solar System!
What could you create for Remote Learning about the Solar System this week and send to us on Seesaw?
- Make a Solar System diagram or model! Send us a photo!
- Make your own Solar System Top Trump cards to add to our fact cards!
- Make a Fact-file about your favourite objects in our Solar System!
- Solar System Fact Hunt (using the Solar System Top Trumps to help you!)
- Make a Solar System Quiz to challenge your family and friends... and teachers!
2. Welcome to Star City: Train to Become An Astronaut!
We are going to learn how to become an astronaut (or 'cosmonaut' in Russian). We will find out about what we need to learn at school. Then, we travel to Star City: the cosmonaut training centre in Russia! There, we will face the gruelling training for space flight and life in near zero-gravity: the vomit comet, the centrifuge and gyroscope, the simulator and the underwater chamber! Do you have the 'right stuff'? Godspeed!
3. Life in Space!
We made it into space. Now, we will dock our Soyuz spacecraft with the ISS: the International Space Station! How do we live in space without gravity? Learn how to do things that we take for granted back on Earth: eating, sleeping, exercising... and even going to the toilet!
4. The Space Race!
Find out about how countries around the world competed to be the first to get into space!
5. The Apollo Missions!
The ultimate goal of the Space Race was to land a human on Earth's Moon. How did the USA's Apollo programme achieve this?
6. Mission to Mars
It's time for humankind's next giant leap. Join Buzz Aldrin from Apollo 11 and Valentina Tereshkova in their plan to travel and live on Mars!
Return to Earth!
After training to explore outer space, we have returned to find out more about our own planet, and how it is being endangered by human action. What can we do to help prevent climate change - perhaps the greatest danger life on our planet has faced? Find all activities and resources that you will need to investigate below:
