  • Recap alternative spellings for: : u.  Read the words: up, some, come, young, blood, hut, nothing, mother. Establish that all words have the ‘u’ sound in them. Identify where it is.
  • Practise segmenting (splitting words up into individual sounds) and blending (combining the sounds to read the word).  You could write the words on bits of paper practise reading them with your phonics fist.
  • Choose 3 words from list and write sentence with word in.  (Support by dictating sentence if help is needed or write sentence on paper and read together).


Monday 29th June

  • Practise segmenting (splitting words up into individual sounds) and blending (combining the sounds to read the word) the following words: treasure, visual, television, measure, pleasure, beige, usual, casual  You could write the words on bits of paper practise reading them with your phonics fist.

  • Quick warm-up (if you have online access) this website is currently free -https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/5/days-of-the-week log in using the username: march20 and password: home.  
  • And/or, play ‘Tricky Word Trucks’: https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/2/tricky-word-trucks (select from Phase 4, 5 or 5a.  If finding tricky, try Phase 2 or 3).
  • Review spellings for the phoneme  O (can spell with ‘o’ or ‘a’ - see examples below)
  • Practise segmenting (splitting words up into individual sounds) and blending (combining the sounds to read the word) the following words: hot, on, was, swan, whatever, swamp, wash).  You could write the words on bits of paper and see if you can think of any others words that have the ‘o’ sound in them.  You could play quick-write (how many times can you write each word in one minute - maybe have a race with your adult?).
  • When you have finished, try making up a sentence for each word. Say it to your adult. You could even try writing a sentence down.
